Stories From Kiribati

One morning while I was still in bed, someone knocked on my door. I opened it and it was my elder sister who came to ask me to do the job for her because she would have a meeting at 9:30am. I turned to look at the clock and it was 9:00 so I said, “Okay, no problem.”

She hugged and kissed me on the cheek then she went off. I went back to bed thinking if she was really going to a meeting or going to see her friends or maybe meeting her boyfriend. However, I started my cleaning. I went to the kitchen and washed the dishes. After that, I cleaned inside my sisters, brothers, parents and lastly my room. I also went to the garden and watered the plants. I then planted some new flowers and cleaned the front of the house. I went to the bathroom to pick some dirty clothes. I washed them and later hang them on the lines outside.

I hurried back and had a shower. After the shower I dried me and put on my clothes. Then I sat down and started having my meal. Now it was my time to watch video. While I was watching video, I was thinking about my whole family. I thought of my parents and my little brother who were at grandma’s house. I thought of my eldest brother who left yesterday to visit his friends and also about my sister who went out for a meeting in town. I became bored.

Then I decided to go out for a walk. I stood up and walked out of my house. I was singing along the way when suddenly I came to a halt by a dog blocking my way. I closed my eye for a few seconds and when I opened them, the dog was gone. Just where the dog was, I could not believe what I saw. I thought I was dreaming but my eyes were wide open when I found a $50 note on the road.
